It is a community of homeschooled curious and creative kids ages 9-12 who meet IN-PERSON with an advanced academics teacher who tailors a program to meet our kids' interests and learning needs. Kids thrive with a ratio of just 6:1 and extensions including STEAM, private piano lessons, Spanish, art, and more.
Each day we start and then end with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) challenges that get our kids creatively learning and working together. For example, our day may start with the kids testing out ideas to create a structure that holds at least 10 books using of only 10 pieces of paper and tape.
Every student has a private piano lesson each week and they practice each day! Our teacher, Ms. Sharon, is delightful and the kids love her. She has a B.F.A. in Music from Carnegie-Mellon University and a Masters in Music Education from George Mason University. She loves music and has been teaching piano and voice one on one for 40 years.
Even with COVID, we actively learn about geography, science, and history by doing things in Virginia like swimming in the Chesapeake Bay, fishing in local lakes, hiking the Appalachian Mountains, apple picking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, visiting museums and historic places like Jamestown, and camping!
Our students have class with a native Spanish speaker twice a week! Our teacher, Mrs. Mari, is amazing. Students learn the vocabulary and grammar needed to speak, read, and write full, complex sentences and hold conversations. She has a deep-rooted passion for positively engaging students to strive to be their best selves.
Kids need to be physically active - every day! One of the ways we do this is to go to an indoor rock-climbing gym every week. You'll also find us playing at local parks and biking to the library.
Every two weeks the kids cook a dinner and plan a "show" for the families. Then, the kids play or watch a movie while the adults get much needed time to talk (over a glass of wine)!
Learning is interconnected and actionable!
Sure, our children learn the traditional subjects like reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, health/fitness, and the arts. Yet, we do so much more to promote healthy development like meditation/yoga, Spanish, individual piano lessons, and a bi-monthly "dinner theater" where the kids prepare food and a show for the families who gather to celebrate our kids. In addition, we get outside, hike, bike, and more.
8:45 am-4:30pm Monday-Friday!
Four days (M-Th), our in-person academic day is led by Jen Mendez, a Virginia-certified elementary school teacher who specializes in advanced academics. These days both traditional subjects as well as creative extension learning like music, art, science experiments, and more. Fridays are dedicated to "extreme STEAM" where the kids get hands-on, minds-on with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. We also go out for "extreme" physical fitness activities like rock climbing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, or white water tubing. Sometimes families host a fun activity for the kids, too!
Learning is an action verb!
Children learn best when they are active and engaged. In our micro-academy, kids ask questions and this shapes our learning. What is your child curious about? Our Virginia-certified teacher, Jen Mendez, facilitates projects, experiments, games, challenges, and even field trips to get hands-on, minds-on with our learning.
Education is more than academics!
Our yearly interdisciplinary learning framework accounts for the academic, physical, creative, and social-emotional developmental needs of children. Yet, it's flexible and we ensure what is learned, how much time kids spend on topics, and even the ways each kid learns is shaped by the needs of individual kids and the group in all.
According to the National Associated for Gifted Children, there are many common traits that gifted children share.
