Reviews

"An exceptionally talented and experienced AAP teacher just opened up more spots in her math club, enrichment programs, and individualized math instruction. Our second grader is in her virtual math club and LOVES it. It is a fantastic club for advanced mathematicians in elementary school (or afterschool enrichment).  The club is fun, rigorous, and social. I was really struggling with how to teach my daughter math, and then Ms. Mendez came and saved the day (and my sanity). She is so passionate and creative and provides plenty of extension opportunities outside the direct classroom time (e.g., math books, riddles, Flipgrid video projects with other kids.) She is a natural in the virtual classroom environment.  It's a complete math course for elementary students for an affordable price." - Amanda

    Ready for Some Serious fun?!

    What We Do

This is not a traditional math class or tutoring program. It's a fun, inquiry- and project-based experience because we believe:

All children, given the right support and time, can learn mathematics to the highest levels.

Beautiful Math Minds classes, clubs, and camps are led by Jen Mendez, a veteran Virginia-certified elementary school educator with over 15 years of experience, specifically as an Advanced Academics Program (AAP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) teacher. Whether online or in-person, kids come together for fun and collaborative mixed age hands-on, minds-on experiences. We tackle enriching challenges and engage in number talks that require the kids to be creative problem-solvers and critical thinkers. We value diversity in thinking and kids who love to ask questions!

    Education is Always a Gift

    Standards vs. Individual Growth

    Standards vs. Individual Growth

COVID resulted many challenges, but it also provided us with many gifts, including the gifts of possibility and opportunity to re-imagine what it means to learn and educate. Education is not a zero-sum game where one child's gain or loss is exactly balanced by the losses or gains of another. Everyone can "win" with each individual win. Societies with higher rates of education have lower crime, better overall health, and civic involvement. Not everyone will have the knowledge and skills to create a vaccine for COVID, but the many will benefit from the knowledge of the few. Success and true equity in education depends on innovation, collaboration, and honoring individual learning.

    Standards vs. Individual Growth

    Standards vs. Individual Growth

    Standards vs. Individual Growth

There are mathematical topics that schools districts, including the one I live in (FCPS), will simply not teach. Children will be expected to learn these concepts all on their own, 100% asynchronously. For many, this means yet more gaps in knowledge that, at some point, have to be filled if kids are to learn higher math in middle school and beyond. Morning Math Club lessons will explicitly teach these topics and more. We can do more than "fill the gaps" that have occurred. We can proactively stop more from happening. Let's personalize and individualize the learning so that each child is growing as a learner, as measured against themselves rather than standards that are explicitly based on age.
